- Faces
- Usually called "emoticons", in this context
"faces" are simply standard text characters that are
used in text documents to indicate the mood of the speaker
: :) ;) =) :o) :-)
and the same but with "|" or "("
instead of ")".
- FAQ
- Abbreviation for "Frequently
Asked Questions",
the section of a website which the webmaster uses to display the
answers to the questions that he gets asked the most so that he
doesn't get swamped with e-mails all asking the same things.
-
- FFA
- Abbreviation for "Free For
All", an FFA is simply page of links
to other websites which were all added by visitors to your website.
- File Transfer Protocol (FTP):
- The programming used to move files
from your computer to your server to be used on your website or
the other way around. There are many freeware and shareware versions
of FTP software available.
- Flash
- An application devloped by the Macromedia company which opens a window that is displayed within
the HTML environment. The window can display animations. Flash is very fast because it draws graphics on the fly, rather than
storing text or graphics as complete images. (Although Flash can also display photographic images and illustrations).
Flash gives you much more creative room than HTML, but it requires a 'plug-in', a piece of code on your computer that
runs Flash. The newer browsers automatically come with Flash. If your user has an older browser, and they don't already
have Flash, they will be asked to download it.
- Frames
- 'Frames' are pages that are displayed within an HTML page. Frames behave like a separate
window with their own menus, scroll
bars, and content. Frames let you keep your logo and menu for example fixed on the
screen while simultaneously displaying another page, even somebody else's
website, inside your web site.
- Freeware
- Software that is free for use by anybody that cares to download
it.
- Freshbot
- This is the name for Google spiders
that are known to add pages to the
Google index faster than the normal Google bots.
